About this product
How the Pick Mattock works
When the soil is baked hard, packed with stones or full of roots, an ordinary spade only bounces. The pointed side of a mattock concentrates the whole swing into a small tip, which breaks crusts and levers out stones that a flat blade cannot touch.
Turn the head around and the opposite side is a flat, chisel-shaped blade. It cuts through roots, scrapes the loosened soil into a pile and trims the sides of a trench, so you finish a job without changing tools.
The head is forged steel painted green and wedged tightly onto a fibreglass handle in yellow and black. Fibreglass does not rot or split with the weather and absorbs some of the shock of each blow, which is kinder to hands and shoulders.
Before you buy the Pick Mattock
The pick on one side and blade on the other make this a favourite for breaking hard, stony or rooty ground and then clearing it. It suits trenching, planting holes and rural building work. A fibreglass handle resists splitting and weather better than wood.
