About this product

How the Earth Auger Drill Bits works

Planting bulbs, seedlings and small shrubs by shovel is slow in firm soil. An auger bit solves the problem: a spiral blade bites into the ground, lifts the loosened soil to the surface and leaves a clean, round hole of the right diameter.

The set has bits of different diameters, so you can match the size of the hole to the plant, from narrow ones for bulbs to wider ones for pot-grown plants. The spiral flights are black steel, and a point at the bottom keeps the bit centred as it starts.

A hexagonal shank fits the chuck of a standard drill or a cordless driver and prevents slipping. Use a drill with a low speed setting and some torque, and the bits will dig through garden soil in a few seconds. They also suit light fence post or sapling holes.

Before you buy the Earth Auger Drill Bits

These bits turn an ordinary drill into a planting-hole digger, which is very handy for bedding plants, bulbs and seedlings. Use a drill with enough torque, work at low speed and lift the bit often to clear soil. Avoid rocky ground.
