About this product
How the Wood Chisel works
Where saws leave rough cuts, a chisel finishes them. The tool removes wood in thin, controlled slices, so a joint can be fitted exactly, a hinge recess cut to depth and a corner squared off.
The blade is polished steel with a ground bevel and a wide, flat back. Keep it sharp and it will glide through softwood and hardwood alike. The blade ends in a tang or socket that fits the wooden handle, and a metal cap protects the end of the handle when you tap it with a mallet.
Joiners, carpenters, door fitters and furniture makers keep a set of several widths. It is a hand tool that rewards care, so hone the edge on a stone, keep the blade covered in the toolbox and never use it as a screwdriver or lever.
Before you buy the Wood Chisel
A sharp chisel is a pleasure to use and a blunt one is a hazard. Keep a fine stone to hand and learn to hone the edge. It suits carpentry, door and window fitting and repair work around the farm.
